  • Beautiful book! Photography is stunning, and the text is superb (yay Carrie!). I have it on my coffee table and look through it often.
  • All the quality was super. This was a present to Sanctum Dive Nusa Penida and Sanctum Dive Una Una.
  • This review is for 100 Dives of a Lifetime The World's Ultimate Underwater Destinations Hardcover – February 26, 2019

This is mostly a very nice National Geographic book. It covers a huge range of diving locations around the world. I like that the dives are split up into level of difficulty, with each location featuring aerial photos of the geographic area, as well as underwater photos. This gave me a good overview of what could be expected if one considered such a dive. Each dive features a short description of the pertinent info for that location.

I expect relatively few people purchasing this book will ever perform any of these dives, and mostly it is targeted as a nice coffee table book. I imagine real divers would use this as a "wish list", but employ a much more detailed reference about a single location if they wanted to actually perform one of the dives.

I was a bit disappointed in the relatively small size of the book at 9 in. x 8.75 in. A minimum size of 12 in. x 12 in. seems more appropriate for this kind of book. Also, while nearly all of the photos are vibrant and colorful, many were grainy, slightly out of focus, and lacked sufficient resolution for the size of the photo - I expect better from National Geographic. At least the price is reasonable at around $20 for a 400 page hardcover book, so I can overlook some of the shortcomings I observed.

    **** 4 STARS - RECOMMENDED ****
  • With National Geographic, you'll never go wrong with a coffee table book and this volume is no different. Sharp color, super-detailed images, and visual representations of impossible locations are all included.

Of course, most of us will never see a tiny fraction of these places in real life so these photos can only do so much. I wish there had been a little heavier reliance on underwater images - it's probably 60 percent dive shots, which is still a lot. But it's still very neat.

The written content is breezy and engaging and this is the sort of coffee table book that provides a few minutes of entertainment. I think it would be a better gift than personal purchase, just so there's expectation or investment and it can be enjoyed for its own creative sake. National Geographic will always provide a solid book!
  • One of the most fascinating things I’ve done in life is snorkeling. I’ve enjoyed this activity off numerous islands in the Caribbean, Hawaii and Mexico. There is nothing quite like diving and swimming in crystal clear water and enjoying the colorful, exotic marine life.

National Geographic in the book 100 Dives of a Lifetime – The World’s Ultimate Underwater Destinations, has given a small glimpse into the beauty and mystery of marine life.

The book is divided into three sections – Beginner Dives, Intermediate Dives and Advance & All Level Dives. Most of the dives are for Scuba (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) a few could be done by free diving or snorkeling. National Geographic has gone to some of the most stunning dive sites and presented the pertinent information along with some beautiful underwater pictures of these sites.

In each section there are short descriptions of the dive sites, including average water temperature, average visibility, average depth and type of dive – open water, reef, caves, and/or wrecks. Accompanying the write up and stunning full color pictures of scenes from that location.

If you have experienced the beauty of marine life, this will be a treat. If you have not yet experienced the fascinating underwater world, this will give a slight glimpse into what awaits you.

This is a beautiful coffee table book. It is almost 400 pages long and contains a world map with a location of each site featured in the book. It also contains some stunning, full color photography.

This is a book you can enjoy for a few minutes at a time or spend much longer periods of time enjoying the content.

Nothing can compare to the actual experience but this book can certainly serve as a good substitute.
  • This is a beautiful book, as you'd expect from Nat Geo. I like the size, basically 9 x 9", but seems bigger. A good size for a table and gets people thinking about our oceans and how spectacular they are all over the world. As the author says, one brief dive in chilly water off Jamestown, Rhode Island, got him hooked on diving. If anything could get a non-diver to give it a try, this book could. It goes without saying that you'll see things you won't ever see any other place, and yet, most people will never take a real dive in any water.

100 Dives of a Lifetime" shows you dives you would want to make, if you could. Beginning on p. 389 there's a list of dives by country and p. 16 has a "dive destination map" that is color coded for beginning, intermediate and advanced dives--corresponding to the sections of the book. Even the beginner dives look spectacular-- "touch the walls of two continental shelves" in Thingvellir, Iceland, "the largest aggregation of whale sharks (huge but harmless) in the world--and an underwater art gallery" in Afuera Mexico. All the photos are just spectacular. If you have any chance to do one of these dives, it would be so worth making a plan to do it. This book is highly motivating (and, if you never dive, it is still an incredible reminder of the dramatic beauty that exists on 75% of our world that we rarely visit.)
